Motorcyclist loses control, dies in Upcountry crash

On Sunday, April 4, 2021, at approximately 05:14 p.m., a motor vehicle crash occurred on Haleakala Highway .8 miles North of Lower Kimo Drive in Kula.

Preliminary investigation reveals a 2012 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle was traveling North on Haleakala Highway. Smith-Shoemaker was wearing a helmet at the time of this crash.

At the time of this crash, the roadway was wet due to recent rain in the area.

The involvement of speed is suspected as a factor in this crash.

The involvement of alcohol and drugs has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.

This is the 2nd traffic fatality for the County of Maui this year as compared to 3 at the same time last year.
