Wailea Residents Evacuated as Police Respond to Unexploded Ordnance

Maui Police Department officers responded to a Wailea residence regarding an unexploded ordnance on Monday.

Officials say the unexploded ordnance was found while excavation work was being done on the property.

As a precaution, surrounding residences were evacuated, and Hoomua Drive was temporarily closed.

MPD’s bomb squad secured the scene.

The road was later reopened and residents were allowed back into the area.

On Tuesday, February 9, at about 10:15 a.m., the Army EOD team identified the ordnance as an M49A2, 60mm mortar. The mortar was taken to an open field, where it was successfully rendered safe.
