New Years’ Brush Fires, Structure Fire Keep MFD Busy

The Maui Fire Department battled two brush fires and a structure fire overnight on New Years’.

MFD crews responded to a 6:38 p.m. alarm on New Year’s Eve for a brush fire reported in the Pulehu Road area of Kula. The fire was deemed under control by 7:01 p.m. and extinguished by 8:06 p.m. The cause of the fire has not been determined and no injuries were reported in the incident.

Officials say a second brush fire broke out in an area above the Lahaina Civic Center just before 12:30 a.m. on January 1. Several companies tended to the blaze and it was extinguished by 2:46 a.m. The cause of the fire has not been determined and no injuries were reported.

Acreage estimates for the brush fires were not immediately available.

A structure fire on Lihiliho Street in Wailuku displaced eight people. Crews arrived following a 1:01 a.m. alarm on New Year’s Day to find the blaze that caused $225,000 in damages to the structure. The fire was extinguished by 4 a.m. In addition to the structure damages, officials say $200,000 in lost contents and $70,000 in vehicle damages were also reported. The cause of the fire has not been determined. No injuries were reported.
