The Maui Police Department is investigating a shooting incident that occurred at an off-duty MPD officer’s home.
On Saturday, December 12, at around 11:06 p.m. officers responded to a residence in Waiehu for a report of a male who had been accidentally shot.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the residence unoccupied and were informed the victim had been taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room.
According to MPD, the investigation revealed that the incident occurred at the residence of an off-duty Maui Police Department Officer and that the discharge of the pistol was accidental.
The alleged pistol used is described as an MPD issued 9mm semi-automatic Glock 17.
MPD says the off-duty officer is neither the victim nor is he believed to be responsible for discharging the weapon at this time.
Authorities say the victim, who suffered a gunshot wound, was at a small gathering with friends where alcohol was present when the incident took place. He was transported to Queen’s Medical Center for further treatment.
The investigation is on-going and active. No further information is being released at this time.
The case is classified as a Reckless Endangering in the First Degree.
