Homes Evacuated as Haliimaile Brush Fire Burns

The Maui Fire Department responded to a brush fire in Haliimaile on Friday afternoon that led to the evacuation of about 30 homes along Aoiki and Leie Streets.

Crews arrived on the scene following a 3:35 p.m. alarm to find a working brush fire in heavy brush within an area that had limited accessibility.

Four engine companies, two emergency callback crews, two MFD tankers, and several private tankers tended to the blaze.

As of 7:48 p.m., the fire was 50 percent contained, according to authorities. Crews will remain on scene through the night to continue securing the perimeter of the fire and conducting mop-up operations.

No damage had been reported.
