Man Hospitalized Following Wild Pig Collision

At approximately 7:41 p.m. on Saturday, a collision occurred on Maui Veterans Highway, .3 Miles North of Maui Central Base Yard.

Maui Police Department officials report that a preliminary investigation reveals that a 2013 Kymco Motor Scooter was traveling North on Maui Veterans Highway headed towards Kahului when the operator of the motor scooter did not observe a wild pig in the roadway.

The 37-year-old operator of the motor scooter struck the pig, causing him to lose control.  The man was ejected off the motor scooter and landed in the roadway.

MPD reports that the man sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time of this crash.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.

To date Maui County has four fatalities this year, as compared to nine at the same time last year.
