Due to COVID-19 health concerns, the 98th Maui Fair has been canceled.

The beloved tradition was scheduled to take place over four days in October.

The event’s organizers Maui Fair Alliance says it was asked by the County of Maui not to hold the fair and will respectfully comply with that request.

Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino called it a very difficult decision to make.

“I’m very saddened about the loss of the Maui County Fair this year. It’s taken world wars and now COVID-19 to cancel the fair,” Mayor Victorino said. “Social distancing would be very difficult to achieve at the fair that draws tens of thousands of people to confined spaces.

“It was a very painful but necessary decision to make,” Mayor Victorino said. “For the fair to happen in early October, financial commitments would need to be made now, and we don’t know what the situation will be at that time.”

“I’m particularly concerned about our nonprofit and community groups that depend on fundraising during the fair. But, I’m hopeful that they might find budget savings during this time, and we hope that others can help offset the loss of fair income.”
