Iowa Man Dies After Being Struck by a Wave at Ka’anapali Beach

At about 5:01 p.m. on January 23, Lahaina Patrol officers were assigned to respond to the beach area fronting the Whalers Village in Kaanapali (2345 Kaanapali Parkway), in regards to an unresponsive male that was just pulled from the water. CPR was currently being administered to the victim in this matter at the time this call for service was received.

Witness accounts revealed, the victim, Pravin D. PATEL (70) of Muscatine Iowa, was standing in waist-deep water fronting the Whaler on Kaanapali Beach when he was knocked over by a wave. Upon standing back up, he was struck by another wave and seemed to go unresponsive as he did not stand after falling the second time. PATEL remained face down in the shore break as two to three additional waves broke on the shore. Witnessing bystanders later assisted PATEL from the water and started lifesaving efforts. Fire Department Personnel took over lifesaving efforts upon their arrival. All efforts to revive PATEL were unsuccessful.

The cause of death is pending autopsy results.
