Injured Hiker Rescued from Bamboo Forest

Maui Fire Department personnel responded to Bamboo Forest for a report of an injured female hiker on Thursday.

The hiker had apparently fallen 25-feet and was unable to walk.

Fire personnel arrived on scene and confirmed the location of the injured hiker. Crews were unable to cross the stream needed to access the victim because it had swollen substantially due to heavy rains in the area.

Officials say Air 1 also could not be utilized because of poor visibility and darkness. The stranded party who were with the victim were told to shelter in place. Fire crews remained on scene through the night to monitor the situation and made two further attempts to cross the stream and access the victim. Conditions would still not allow the successful crossing of the stream.

At daybreak, better weather conditions allowed Rescue 10 on board Air 1 to approach the area and successfully extricate the injured hiker along with the two others in her party.

At 7:42 a.m. on Friday, medics transported the injured hiker to Maui Memorial Medical Center via ambulance.
