Portions of Baldwin Avenue reopened; Brushfire acreage increased to 578 acres

Baldwin Avenue has been reopened in both directions up to Skill Village. The portion of Baldwin from Skill Village to Paia Elementary School remains closed.

Skill Village residents in Paia are no longer being asked to stay in their residences. It’s safe to leave their homes, police reported.

A few structures near Baldwin Avenue were evacuated. Now, there are no current evacuations.

Earlier, Baldwin Avenue had been closed from Mill Street near the old mill to Paia Elementary School while Maui firefighters battled a brush fire reported at 1:07 p.m. today near Holomua Road.

The fire burned behind Doris Todd Christian Academy and moved makai, the Maui Fire Department reported. Two helicopters – Air 1 and 2 – were making water drops while firefighters on the ground were with Engine 2 from Paia, Engine 10 from Kahului and Engine 5 from Makawao. Engine 14 from Wailea and Engine 6 from Kihei also responded to the fire, along with a battalion chief. Private water tanker crews were assisting.
