Man Rescued After Activating Emergency Beacon in Haleakala Crater

The National Park Service and Maui Fire Department received notification early Monday morning that a visitor had activated an emergency beacon requesting emergency assistance in Haleakalā Crater.

A search and rescue operation, coordinated by NPS and MFD, resulted in the location of the reporting party.

A NPS Law Enforcement Ranger made contact with a man in his 30s, near Hōlua Cabin.

The patient was unable to walk, exhibited signs of altitude sickness and severe dehydration. He medically evacuated by MFD Rescue 1 Helicopter.
