Mayor Michael Victorino answers weekly questions submitted to his office staff.
Question: Do you know why they’re doing roadwork on Haleakala Highway and Makawao Avenue?
Answer: Mahalo for your question. My staff talked with our Department of Public Works and learned that this improvement project includes 1,000 feet of roadway widening and repaving along Makawao Avenue between Apana Road and Haleakala Highway.
The scope of the work includes removal of obstructions, relocation of utility poles, relocation of existing fire hydrants, grading, new roadway pavement structure, new AC curbs, concrete curb, pavement striping, traffic sign installation, traffic signal modifications, grass swales and other incidental items.
Contractor Maui Kupono Builders has already completed work on staking, best management practices and clearing and grubbing. It planned to complete grading and prepping for new utility poles this past week.
I look forward to this project helping to alleviate some of the traffic Upcountry residents face on a daily basis and thank the public for its patience and support.
