Visitor Swept into Surf in Hana

The Maui Fire Department responded to a report of a distressed swimmer about 150-feet offshore at Koki Beach in Hana on Wednesday morning.

Crews arrived on the scene to find a 37-year-old victim from Oakland, Calif. supporting himself with a rescue tube that was swam out to him by a bystander.

Two fire personnel members assisted the victim onto the shore where medics tended to him.

According to officials, the man was swept out into the surf by a riptide. He was reportedly in good condition and refused transport for medical services.
