Maui Police Department to Increase Traffic Enforcement Over the Holiday Weekend

The Labor Day holiday weekend is one of the deadliest times of the year in terms of impaired driving fatalities.  To date, there have been 15 traffic-related fatalities on Maui in 2019, Ten (10) of which are alcohol and or drug-related.  The Maui Police Department- Traffic Division will be out enforcing our zero-tolerance response to impaired driving. The public can expect increased patrols and traffic enforcement to include the use of unmarked patrol vehicles and Impaired Driving Checkpoints throughout the holiday weekend.  If you are caught driving impaired, you will be arrested.

It is up to individuals to make the smart decision to drive sober and to help put an end to these senseless preventable deaths occurring on our roadways.

We humbly ask for the public’s help.  If you are out on the roads and you see someone you suspect is driving impaired, please call the Maui Police Department at 244-6400 or 911 to report it.  Your support is critical to helping us make our roads safer and stopping these preventable impaired driving deaths from occurring. You could help save a life.

If you plan on celebrating this weekend please remember:

  • Before you start consuming intoxicants, make sure you have a designated driver.
  • If you have been drinking, use a taxi, ride sharing service or call a sober friend or family member.
  • If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, be a true friend and take his or her keys.  Help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.
  • Make the smart choice to not drink and drive. Help keep our roadways safe for everyone.
