Maui Fire Department were called to reports of a 20-year-old Maui woman who had been swept into the ocean while sitting on the rocks by the Cliff House in Kapalua on Sunday.
Responding to the 2:05 p.m. report, a fire crew and an ambulance crew from Napili responded while MPD’s Air 1 helicopter with a rescue crew were placed on standby at the Kahului airport.
Upon their arrival firefighters and medics found the patient already out of the water, having suffered multiple lacerations and contusions and experiencing difficulty breathing.
They began treatment for the patient’s injuries and carried her to a ground ambulance at the nearest access point, still some distance away.
Meanwhile a fire crew from Lahaina prepared a landing zone at Napili Park for the county’s Maui Medevac helicopter. From there the patient was airlifted to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition.
