The Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve on the southern coast of Maui closed at 2 p.m. on Friday due to tiger shark sightings.
Department of Land and Natural Resource officials say that blacktip reef sharks are pupping and have been coming in near-shore this past week, which are attracting tiger sharks to come in as well.
This is the same occurrence that happened about a year ago when the reserve had to be closed for about a week or two until the tiger sharks vacated the area, DLNR reports.
Ocean Safety and NARS staff are monitoring the reserve. For now, the beach remains closed.
