UPDATE: Kihei Brush Fire Causes Evacuation of Hotel Wailea

At 6:42 pm today, a brush fire was reported near 4050 Kalai Waa Street in Wailea. There are 7 fire trucks, 2 water tankers and 1 ladder company fighting this fire.

The fast-moving brushfire caused The Hotel Wailea to be evacuated. Kihei Community Center has been opened as an evacuation shelter. At this time, we do not know how many acres have burned and the fire is actively burning and not under control. Stay tuned for more information and follow police and fire fighters instructions. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

According to witness reports, an explosion of some kind near electrical transformers ignited the surrounding area. Strong winds accelerated the flames and the fire spread.
