A near fatal motor vehicle collision occurred around 10:34 p.m. on Wednesday on South Kihei Road south of Nohokai Street in Kihei.
Maui Police Department officials say the collision occurred as a black Yongfu moped, operated by a 25-year old-male from Kihei, was traveling southbound against traffic within the northbound lane of South Kihei Road and collided into a silver 2018 Cadillac XTS four-door sedan that was traveling north within the lane.
The operator of the moped, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from his moped following the head-on collision. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room in critical condition.
The operator and the passenger of the Cadillac, both visitors from Alaska, were wearing their seat belts and were not injured in the collision.
South Kihei Road was temporarily closed between Nohokai Street and Piikea Avenue for approximately three hours while police investigated.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
