Fire Burns Structure in Upper Kanaio

Maui Fire Department firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire in the upper Kanaio area at 8:09 a.m. on Thursday. Crews from Kula, Makawao, and Kahului responded along with Air 1.

When crews arrived on scene in the remote area above upper Kanaio road, they found a structure approximately 600 square feet that had already been completely destroyed by fire.

Because of difficult access due to rugged terrain, four wheel drive utility brush trucks were used to get water to the fire. Air 1 was also utilized and made water drops by air.

The fire was officially declared extinguished at 2:40 p.m.

No one was home at the time of the fire and the cause is undetermined. There were also no injuries reported.
