Good Eats: Poi By The Pound

What’s your favorite Hawaiian food dish? For me it’s a combination Alan Wong once dubbed the ‘poi bowl,’ in it is poi, kalua pig and lomi salmon. With that you get all the freshness of the lomi salmon with a bit of acid from the lomi, then the richness and meatiness of the kalua pig and the creaminess of the poi. When I am on Maui, I love the Poke & Poi Bowl from Poi By The Pound. Expertly made, authentic Hawaiian poke combined with super fresh poi and my heart begins to race with excitement.

Poi By The Pound – 430 Kele Street, Kahului

At Poi By The Pound, homestyle, authentic Hawaiian cuisine is served in a comfortable atmosphere and at reasonable prices in the heart of Kahului. For most, this is a must-stop (once you’re in the area) and like many Maui staples the portion size, flavor and variety does not disappoint.

Squid Luau Combo: served with rice, poi, lomi salmon and poke.

With a variety of plates, side dishes, mains, and local staples like teriyaki BBQ chicken, butter garlic shrimp and kimchee fried rice — my go-to is the delectable Hawaiian Food! If you’re ono for squid luau, laulau, or kalua pork and cabbage that craving will be satisfied!

Smoked Meat: Tender pieces of pork marinated in their special sauce then smoked.

Even the smoked meat with onions and a heaping scoop of local style sticky rice are satisfying to the core. What a great experience to have all these kanikapila treats and local eats under one roof and you don’t have to do the cooking.

Lau Lau Plate: served with rice, poi, lomi salmon, mac or green salad.

Authentic Hawaiian food served with a smile never tasted and never looked so good! The standouts for me include the Lau Lau, poke, smoked meat and of course the poi. And eating at Poi By The Pound’s family owned and operated establishment makes me feel like I am eating at aunties house, always a smile, lovingly prepared and heaping portions.
