Unhelmeted Moped Rider in Serious Condition after Maalaea Crash

On Friday at approximately 3:01 p.m., a Motor Vehicle Crash occurred on Honoapiilani Highway (30) south of North Kihei Road in Maalaea.

The crash occurred as a black 2011 Kaitong moped, operated by a 48-year-old male from Paia, was traveling south within the outer lane of Honoapiilani Highway.

The male lost control of his moped and fell onto the roadway. He sustained critical life-threatening injuries as a result. The male was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the male was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

One lane was closed for about three hours as police conducted their investigation.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing
