Good Eats: Izakaya Genbe

Head to Japan and you’ll likely stumble upon countless local izakaya eateries. The term izakaya translates to an informal Japanese restaurant that specializes in small bites, perfect for sharing, imbibing beverages and socializing. Welcome Izakaya Genbe to the south Maui neighborhood!

Located on the makai wing of Azeka Shopping Center, the idyllic Japanese lanterns and traditional curtains welcome you along with wooden benches outside (when the wait is long). In the former spot as Izakaya Maru this same location, with new owners and a slightly different name serves up delicious Japanese food, with an attentive smile and at a price that is both affordable and appetizing.

The chef is from Japan and is most certainly as authentic as they come, but her secret passions also come from France where she trained. You may catch her walking through the restaurant with a festive beret on and offering a fusion of savory delights, perfectly cooked and pristinely prepared.

Premium tofu served fresh and silky soft.
Fresh salmon sashimi, expertly cut and plated to perfection.
The menu is composed of sushi, sashimi, ala carte offerings and skewers – you can still get your fix of savory kinpira vegetables.
Premium cut sashimi is the priciest part of the menu with individual portions around $20. This is still great value and makes the restaurant affordable for many palates.
Handmade musubis are also available and made to order.
Authentic fine Japanese comfort foods.
No meal would be complete without tempura!
And if you’re not opposed to some slimy goodness they have natto with ocra = double whammy slime!
