Queen Kaahumanu Center Making Security Changes After Deadly Machete Attack

After a deadly machete attack on March 18 and a subsequent review from the owners of Queen Kaahumanu Center on Maui, the mall’s making security changes.

It’s considering posting security officers at the bus transit center at the back of the mall.

The March 18 incident started on the Maui Bus.

Security will also be getting crisis intervention training from the Maui Police Department to better understand how to respond to incidents involving the mentally ill.

The accused killer, 23-year-old Kumulipo Sylva, is undergoing a mental health examination.

He’s charged with the brutal murder of 35-year-old Eduardo Cerezo inside a mall bathroom.

Court documents show Sylva told a witness he killed him because he was a “demon.”
