Good Eats: Monkeypod Kitchen

Good food is practically synonymous with the name Peter Merriman. One of the founding fathers of Hawaiian Regional Cuisine in the islands, Merriman crafted a more casual eatery named Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman and has since opened a new third location at Whalers Village. With extremely popular Monkeypods already in Wailea and Ko Olina (Oahu), this new location offers guests a chance to try delicious, locally-sourced, fusion cuisine in Kaanapali too.

One of the highlights of this eatery known for shared plates, craft brews and exciting cuisine is the enticing and affordable happy hour menu. Served daily from 3pm-5:30pm and again 9pm-11pm, the happy hour menu consists of half off small plates, except poke and oysters, $10 pizzas (minus the bourgeois pizza) and various drink specials including specialty beers starting at $5, wines by the glass for $7, cocktails for $9.50 and Maui Ocean Vodka Cocktails for $6.

The coconut corn chowder is delightful and has a mild curry flavor. It is creamy, sweet yet savory and comes with a side of flatbread perfect for dipping.


Kauai shrimp and Hamakua mushroom potstickers are nicely done with a crisp perfectly cooked wonton and never greasy or over done. They are a fantastic combination of textures and flavors.


One of my favorite items of all time is the Pumpkin Patch Ravioli made with roasted squash, wilted spinach, goat cheese and toasted walnut sage butter pesto. The ravioli is tender, sweet, buttery and the chèvre adds impeccable creaminess and a hint of tartness.


If you love mushrooms and truffle this is the pizza for you. The Hamakua Mushroom and truffle pizza is a generous amount of mushrooms drizzled with truffle oil and served on a thin and crispy crust.


If the pizza wasn’t enough there’s also truffle fries which are sprinkled with parmesan cheese and served with both ketchup and aioli for dipping.


Lastly, you can’t go to any Merriman restaurant without ordering the famous Mai Tai, it is topped with lilikoi foam and is a standout signature cocktail. The foam is worth trying over anything else.

What I love about Merriman’s is the consistency of the food. You can dine at any of his restaurants and the quality, taste, flavor, preparation and execution are always spot-on. Happy Hour can be a bit hectic and the service may not be as attentive as compared to regular lunch or dinner service, but the food will always leave me coming back again and again.
