Hawaii State Hospital escapee Randall Saito caught

Honolulu police were notified that Hawaii State Hospital escapee Randall Saito was captured in California Wednesday. According to ABC affiliate KGO, sheriffs arrested Saito in San Joaquin County about 100 miles north of San Francisco. According to San Joaquin Sheriffs, the arrest was made as the result of a tip received from an alert taxi cab driver. Saito was arrested in the area of Highway 99 and Waterloo Road in Stockton.

Saito, 59, escaped from the psychiatric hospital on Sunday. Police confirmed Saito got on a plane bound for San Jose, California.

Saito was acquitted of the 1979 murder of Sandra Yamashiro, based on mental disease or disorder, and committed to the state hospital.

Saito has been charged with escape in the second degree, a class C felony with a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison and a $10,000.00 fine. Escape in the first degree requires use of force and was not charged in this case. The charge is considered an allegation of wrongdoing, and Saito is presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty of the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
