Good Eats: Tobi’s Shave Ice

With a name like Tobi’s Shave Ice, you might be surprised to learn this spot, located in Paia along Hana Highway, serves some of the best, freshest and tastiest poke plates around. Yup, that’s right I said POKE. The name might be a bit deceiving, but this adorable stop specializes in make-your-own, customizable, creations, made to order.

To be completely honest, I haven’t tried anything else here except the poke plate, so I can’t share my opinion about the shave ice, sandwiches, lunch plates or acai bowls. But the other treats looked amazing and very popular.

The Menu

A perfect spot for brunch, lunch or a light dinner, the menu consists of fish plates, chicken, chili, acai bowls and coffee. They also serve Roselani Ice Cream and of course their famous shave ice. I ordered the Fresh Ahi Poke Plate, while others around me also ordered poke and acai bowls.

How to order their freshly made poke.

First, you pick your choice of poke plate or poke salad. Second, choose your recipe: Shoyu, Ginger, Wasabi, Suicide (spicy mayonnaise and tobiko), Hawaiian (limu & inamona) and Ceviche (topped with lime and coconut milk). Once you place your order the poke is assembled, tossed and served.

Poke Plate

The ahi was expertly cut, this plate came with a choice of white or brown rice (topped with furikake, which I love), also the poke sits on a bed of crisp romaine lettuce and is sprinkled with wonton strips. This poke plate was like a poke lunch plate and salad in one. I loved every morsel of juicy, tender, salty, creamy and crunchy goodness!

The value is wonderful too, you get a hefty portion, it’s made well, perfectly seasoned and extremely fresh.

When venturing in and around Paia stop by and check out Tobi’s Shave Ice, for their poke.
