Haiku woman dies in fatal Baldwin Avenue crash

On Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at approximately 5:27 p.m., a two-car motor vehicle accident occurred on Baldwin Avenue, west of Mahiko Street in Paia. A blue 2011 Nissan Altima four-door sedan, was traveling eastbound on Baldwin Avenue, when it crossed left of center on a right curve in the roadway, colliding into a white 2015 Tesla model-S two-door sedan, traveling westbound on Baldwin Avenue.

The female operator of the Nissan Altima was pronounced dead at the scene. The front seat passenger of the Nissan Altima, a 19 year old female from Paia, was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room in critical condition.

The operator of the Tesla Model-S, a 65 year old female from Makawao, was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room in stable condition.

The operator of the Nissan Altima was identified, following the notification of next of kin, as 20 year old Sydnee L. Apao of Haiku.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Apao and the operator of the Tesla Model-S were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision. The front seat passenger of the Nissan Altima was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The involvement speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s eighth traffic fatality for 2016 as compared to four at this time last year.
