Visitor Pulled from West Maui Waters

On Thursday, 03/03/16 at 2:17 p.m., emergency crews responded to reports of bystanders assisting a swimmer in the ocean fronting the Kuleana Resort, at 3959 Lower Honoapiilani Road.

Napili firefighters arrived at 2:24 p.m. and saw two Good Samaritans attempting to revive on a person lying on a surfboard 100 yards from shore. Ocean safety personnel on rescue watercraft brought the victim and Samaritan rescuers to shore where paramedics and firefighters took over CPR.

Despite all life-saving efforts, the victim died at the scene. The victim is identified as Thomas D. Lindquist (66) from Redmond, Washington.

A Good Samaritan saw the man having trouble in the water and swam out to assist him just before another bystander came out to help with the surfboard. Before bystanders got to the man, the victim went unresponsive.

Ocean safety personnel from Kaanapali and firefighters from Napili responded to the incident.
