The massive 5,300 acre Kahikinui brush fire has now been called 100 percent contained late Saturday afternoon.
Fire crews have cut firebreaks in all of the concerned areas that could be reached by bulldozers and used hand crews on foot to create control lines around most of the fire perimeter.
No major flare-ups were seen today. Firefighters continued searching for hotspots and mopped up easy to reach areas along Piilani Highway.
Today’s change in weather was good news for crews who battled the fire in winds blowing up to 25 mph. The wind is forecasted to switch to a southwesterly flow and back off to about 5 to 10 mph this evening, before increasing to about 10 to 20 mph Kona winds on Sunday.
Firefighters are not calling the fire extinguished just yet, and will be making periodic fire patrols of the area during the night and anticipate making numerous checks in the days ahead.
