Hundreds Say Goodbye to Lahaina’s Sugar Cane Train

In 1969 A.W. “Mac” McKelvy got together with the Makai Corporation and created the Sugar Cane Train. The line has operated passenger service from Lahaina to Puukolii (just north of Kaanapali) daily for 45 years. Since 1970, over fifteen million tourists to Maui have ridden the train making it one of West Maui’s most popular attractions. August 1st was the last day the Sugar Cane Train will make the 6-mile trek. They will only be operating a half day operation with the last train leaving at 1pm. This week nearly every train has been sold out and the train has been running an hour or so behind schedule. The staff expressed a heart-warming feeling of community togetherness as they counted down the days.

The end of an era… A hui hou to “Anaka”, “Myrtle” and our working ohana at the Lahaina, Ka’anapali and Pacific Railroad.
