Maui Fire Department firefighters were dispatched on Saturday at 9:02 a.m. to a structure fire on Hansen Road in Pu`unene.
According to officials, firefighters could see the smoke and fire from the burning structure while enroute.
Crews arrived at 9:10 a.m. to find an old plantation home fully involved in fire, across the street from the Puunene Post Office.
Two engines from Kahului and Wailuku were assisted by Tanker 10 & Rescue 10 from Kahului as well as a tanker from the Wailea Fire Station. One Battalion Chief also responded.
The old home was reportedly abandoned and it appeared to be occupied by homeless persons. The fire was contained to that single structure estimated to be about 700 square feet and it was destroyed.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby grass fields.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
The scene is very near to the now closed Puunene Mill and its large smoke stack. No damage estimates were yet available.
