At approximately 1:50 p.m. this afternoon, Moloka’i firefighters responded to reports of a female party missing in the area of the Kalaupapa lookout located in Pala’au State Park. A friend of the 59-year-old woman reportedly happened upon her dog and vehicle parked near the lookout with no sign of the woman. At that point, responders were called to search. Engine 9 (Ho’olehua) and Engine 4 (Kaunakakai) responded.
Shortly after arriving on the scene, Engine 9 personnel met up with friends of the missing woman to gather information. A friend of the victim had brought their dog with them, and apparently, this dog led rescuers directly to a location on the trail where the victim would be spotted approximately 150 feet down a very steep incline. The woman was unable to move or respond to verbal communications. Fire crews used a rope rescue system to bring the victim back up to the trail where Medics took over care. The 59-year-old Moloka’i resident was reported to have sustained multiple injuries as a result of the fall, but was transported to Moloka’i General Hospital alert and well oriented.
