At approximately 4:50 p.m. this afternoon, Maui firefighters responded to reports of two people found floating and unresponsive on the south end of Keawakapu Beach in Kihei. They were both reportedly found very close to shore and brought on to dry land by other beachgoers. Ladder 14 (Wailea) and Engine 6 (Kihei) responded.
Upon arrival, crews found bystanders performing CPR on both victims. Firefighters and Medics took over care, and continued lifesaving efforts. One of the victims, described as a male in his 20’s was pronounced dead at the scene by Medics. The other victim, described as a female in her 20’s was transported by Medics to Maui Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Further information about the victims are unavailable at this time, and it is unclear what events led to this drowning.
UPDATE: The 37-year-old female that was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center was later pronounced dead.
The cause of death is still under investigation.
Both the male and female appear to have been visitors from the Republic of Korea. The release of names is pending notification of next of kin.
