Hector quickly strengthens into a Major Cat3 Hurricane

At 5:00 PM, the center of Hurricane Hector was located 1640 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. Hector is moving toward the west near 12 mph and this motion is expected to continue for the next several days.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 120 mph with higher gusts. Hector is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening at a slower rate is expected during the next couple of days.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles.
