Fireworks believed to have sparked Kihei brush fire destroying 2 homes

Firefighters were dispatched at 3:59 pm to a fast-moving brush fire behind homes on Kawailani Circle. Enroute, firefighters were informed that the rear of these homes was now on fire. 5 engines, 1 ladder, 1 Rescue, 2 tankers and one Battalion Chief responded.

The fire destroyed 2 homes and damaged 4 before firefighters had the fire under control. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, caused by fireworks. A witness did hear children playing with fireworks behind the homes immediately before the fire began. Fireworks remnants were found in the area.

PC: Arbie Hamayelian

Total damages for all the homes exceed $1 Million but damages are still being tallied. One firefighter suffered an injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Residents of the homes are being assisted by the American Red Cross. A shelter at the Kihei Community Center has been set up by the Maui Emergency Management Agency.
