State Representative Angus McKelvey announced the release of $425,971 for air conditioning for Lahainaluna High School.
McKelvey previously secured the funding for the project in the state budget and is “happy to see the funds being released by the DOE to move forward on the much-needed cooling of the Lahainaluna classrooms.”
“My hope is now that the contract has been awarded, the work can be done in time to have the buildings cooled at the hottest part of the year,” said McKelvey (West Maui, Mā‘alaea, North Kīhei).
This contract for air conditioning is an integral part of the overall Lahainaluna High School Classroom Building Project award, which will include seven general classrooms, a self-contained special education room, restrooms, a conference room, a faculty center, and an electrical room, McKelvey said.
McKelvey is also pleased that the contract was awarded to Betsill Brother LLC, a local company from Kīhei, which ranks in the top 9 percent of Hawaiʻi licensed contractors.
“Having a local company do this project is an important step in making sure it’s done right and I’m happy to see this important project for our kids going to a Maui business,” he said.
According to the Department of Education, the construction of this project will begin soon.
