Makena State Recreation Area Closed Due to High Wind, Falling Trees

Makena State Recreation Area has been closed as a result of high wind and falling trees.

“Per the recommendation of Lifeguards and Maui DOCARE, Maui State Parks will be closing Makena State Park immediately for public safety concerns,” a notice of the Department of Land and Natural Resources Facebook page read Tuesday afternoon.

Wind gusts are estimated at 50 mph and several trees as well as branches have fallen throughout multiple areas of the park, according to officials.

Parks staff will assess the conditions of the park tomorrow morning and determine if we will be able to reopen at that time.
