Good Eats: Maui Manjookies

When you hear the word manju, memories of a tasty Japanese pastry traditionally filled with azuki bean come to mind. Hear the word Manjookies and you might wonder what is it exactly?

Created by Jannelle Fukuoka, after she was inspired to come up with a yummy treat for her boyfriend, the Manjookie is a combination of manju married with a butter cookie. “My boyfriend didn’t like manju, so I created a crust that he would like. And he doesn’t like traditional azuki, so we put peanut butter in the middle and called it a Manjookie,” she said.

Baking since the age of 12, Fukuoka loved to create treats and snacks as a hobby and favorite pastime. In 2014, she decided to open a small mini-mart serving plate lunches, grab-n-go items, cold beverages and affordable food. But the best-selling item became her famously popular Maui Manjookies. “I think its popular because people want something different and it’s got different fillings inside. The crust is really good it’s really buttery and flaky,” she adds.

Despite starting the business years ago, the Maui Manjookie craze has really taken off. People from across the island of Maui and abroad are on the hunt for the delectable treat. Many of her island-wide locations are often sold-out and people pre-order specialty bags everyday for pickup from the Kahului headquarters.

The main store is a bit off the beaten path in Kahului located at Mike’s Mini Mart on Hanamau Street. She delicately wraps specialty flavors like Guava-Apricot, Cranberry, Sweet Potato and Lilikoi-Pineapple, just to name a few. There’s even Mike’s least favorite azuki bean and unusual lima bean too.

With so many flavors to try it’s nice to know you can sample some of the golden morsels or get a sampler/variety pack to taste them all or share with friends and family.
