Around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday about 23,900 customers in various parts of Lahaina, Upcountry, South Maui, Kahului and Wailuku experienced an outage for about five minutes to two hours in different areas due to sudden loss of generation from a generating unit at the Maalaea Power Plant and two of the independent wind farms.
The loss of generation triggered an automatic load shed of various area circuits to protect the electrical system and prevent a more widespread outage. Areas were brought back online in phases starting about 7:35 a.m with all customers restored around 9:50 a.m.
A separate outage also affected about 8,500 customers in areas from Pukalani and East Maui around 8:45 a.m. after a tree fell on power lines. Power was restored to all customers by 11:05 a.m. after crews cut the tree clear of the lines.
