No tsunami threat to Hawaii after 7.0 quake hits near New Caledonia

At 2:42 pm, a large earthquake has occurred near the Loyalty Islands Southeast of New Caledonia, but there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The quake measured at a magnitude of 7.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. However, officials at the PTWC said it did not generate a tsunami.

Update at 3:01- officials have downgraded the intensity to a magnitude 6.8 M
