Central Maui Landfill Remains Closed Following Fire

Maui County officials have provided an update via Facebook regarding Friday’s landfill fires and the effect on landfill operations:

The EKO Compost Fire is almost under control, however due to continued heavy smoke and safety reasons Maui County can’t open the landfill or the green waste drop off area because heavy smoke has spread over landfill roads making it difficult to see and breathe.

Maui Fire Department firefighters, Eko compost water trucks as well as Central Maui landfill water trucks remain onsite and actively fighting the fire.

Due to current conditions and wind picking up, it is estimated the county will not be able to open the landfill or green waste operations Saturday at all and will reopen on Monday normal schedule.
