At 1:58 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2017, Hana firefighters responded to a freshwater swimming hole off of the Hana Highway near the Keanae Peninsula for a male victim that was injured after jumping into a pond.
Firefighters arrived at 2:37 p.m. and found the male victim still sitting in the pond at the water’s edge. After evaluating the man and his injuries, firefighters put him in a stretcher basket and carried the man out to Hana highway where he was loaded into an ambulance. Paramedics then took him to the Keanae Park on the Keanae Peninsula where the man was picked up by a helicopter medevac and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition.
The man reported jumping about 15 feet from a ledge into the freshwater pond and suffered multiple injuries to his upper and lower extremities after landing on some rocks in shallow water.
The victim is a 28-year-old man living at a hostel in Wailuku. He was swimming at the pond with group of friends when the mishap occurred.
