At 10:16 p.m. on Monday, July 10, 2017 Makawao firefighters received a report of smoke coming from a gulch below Kapakalua Road, near Nilu Place in Haiku.
Makawao firefighters arrived on scene at 10:29 p.m., and had to make access down very steep and difficult terrain to find the source of the smoke and flames.
Fire crews found an abandoned 400 square foot structure that had been consumed by fire and the fire spreading into the surrounding brush and trees. The fire was contained at 11:12 p.m., and extinguished at 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The cause of the fire was undetermined, but was believed to have originated within the abandoned structure. The structure, valued at $1000, was destroyed by the fire. Under 1000 square feet of brush and trees adjacent to the structure were impacted by the fire.
Fire crews from Makawao and Kula responded to the incident, along with a water tanker from Kahului.
