At 12:39 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017, firefighters airlifted a woman that had fallen down a steep cliff area overlooking the famed “Jaws” surfbreak in Peahi.
The fire department’s Air-1 helicopter found the woman at the bottom of a steep 40 foot slope just below the lookout area to the “Jaws” surfbreak. Rescue personnel secured the woman into a stretcher basket and airlifted the female victim to a landing zone set up at nearby Valley Isle Memorial Park.
At 1:30 p.m. the woman was transferred to paramedics who treated and transported her to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The 24-year-old female victim from New York City, was walking down a trail that leads to the shoreline when she lost her footing and fell about 20 feet down a steep incline. The victim was walking with another female when the accident happened. The female victim is living on Maui short-term, in Wailuku.
Paia firefighters and a rescue crew from Kahului responded to the incident.
