Fatal Hit-and-Run: Police Arrest Suspect in Death of teenager in Kihei

UPDATE: On Monday, December 5, 2016 at approximately 2:17 p.m., 20 year-old Charles Tyler Hardy of Kihei was arrested at his residence in connection with the crash that killed 16 year-old Hannah Simmons. He was arrested for the offense(s) of Accidents Involving Serious Bodily Injury or Death and Negligent Homicide in the Second Degree. He was released pending further investigation. The suspected vehicle involved, a blue 2007 Ford F-250 pick-up truck, was seized as evidence. The Maui Police Department would like to thank the public for their assistance with this investigation.

On Sunday, November 27, 2016 at approximately 8:50 p.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred on Piilani Highway (31) at the intersection of Uwapo Road in Kihei. The collision occurred as a vehicle traveling on Kaiwahine Street collided into a pedestrian, who was in a marked crosswalk, as it made a left turn onto Piilani Highway.

The vehicle involved fled the area. The pedestrian, a 16 year-old female, was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the vehicle involved is possibly a blue-colored Dodge or Chevy full size pick-up truck with an after-market lift and tires.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is on-going.

This is Maui County’s 23rd traffic fatality for 2016 as compared to 21 the same time last year.
