UPDATE: Police Release Identity of Victims in Fatal Kahului Crash

UPDATED REPORT: The female operator of the black Scion has been identified as 33-year old Melissa Egbert of Lahaina. The male operator of the silver Nissan has been identified as 29-year old Joshua Apo of Wailuku. The accident was reported at about 3:49 p.m.

On Saturday, October 29, 2016 at about 4 p.m., a motor vehicle accident occurred on Kuihelani Highway (380) at about mile-marker 4 in Kahului. A silver Nissan sedan was traveling north on Kuihelani Highway within the opposing south-bound lane of travel. The Nissan collided head-on with a black Scion sedan that was traveling south on Kuihelani Highway. A third vehicle, a blue Hyundai sedan, was also traveling south on the highway and collided into the Scion.

The lone male operator of the Nissan and the lone female operator of the Scion were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room where they both later died from their respective injuries. The two occupants of the Hyundai were also transported to the emergency room where they were treated for minor injuries.

The male operator was a 29-year old resident of Wailuku. The female operator was a 33-year old resident of Lahaina. Their identities have not been released. The occupants of the Hyundai were tourists from Washington.

The accident caused a road closure between Puunene Avenue and Honoapiilani Highway for about four hours while police conducted their investigation.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined and are under investigation.

This is Maui County’s seventeenth and eighteenth traffic fatality in 2016 as compared to 19 at this time last year.

At around 4 PM this afternoon, Emergency response teams from the Maui Police Department, Maui Fire Department, along with multiple ambulance crews from American Medical Response responded to a reported multiple vehicle accident at Kuihelani Highway at Waiko Road. One vehicle was being pursued by police after hitting a police car. Witnesses say the pursuit ended in a head-on collision after the suspect crossed over into the opposing lane of traffic. Two people were reported as unresponsive at the scene.

UPDATE: at 7:45PM the roadway has been cleared.
