Good Eats: Grand Wailea’s new breakfast menu

It’s been said time and time again that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I love breakfast! In fact, I love it so much sometimes I eat breakfast for dinner. One of my favorite spots for breakfast also features amazing views. The Grand Wailea boasts a stunning oceanfront backdrop… And here’s a secret, order ala carte ($7-$24) instead of the buffet ($31.50 – $49 Sunday Brunch) and you’ll find patience is a virtue and your stomach (and pocketbook) will thank you for it.image

A few months ago Chef Ryan Urig decided to revamp the Grand Dining Room Maui menu. While most jump-up and head to the buffet the ala carte menu is full of healthy, outstanding, flavorful and memorable dishes. Here’s a look at the new menu items, including a brand new tapas breakfast menu which features classic breakfast dishes but at smaller portions and reduced prices.

Banana bread French toast
A Maui tradition fresh, warm, griddled banana bread served french toast style is soft, comforting and delicious. The gentle sprinkles of powdered sugar and touches of fresh fruit make this a great morning treat. Tapas $9, full portion $17
Mango Parfait
Mango Granola Parfat comes with a generous portion of house made granola served with mango, orange, banana, Grand Wailea honey and vanilla yogurt. Its vibrant, tasty, sweet mixed with a citrus and creamy. My only suggestion would be to add more mango, since it’s called the mango parfait. Tapas $7, full portion $12.
Kim chi loco moco
Any local eatery must feature the world famous Loco Moco, right? Here’s an Asian twist on a Hawaii staple. The Loco Moco is served with kimchee fried rice, ground Angus beef patty, fried egg and Maui Onion gravy. The rice was moist, had gentle hints of kimchee and wasn’t spicy at all. The gravy was well developed and generous portions of mushrooms and green onion topped this savory dish. I like my loco moco to be hearty and tasty, this hit the mark well. Tapas $11, full portion $20.
Pineapple upside down pancakes
One of my all-time favorite breakfast items EVER, is the pineapple upside-down pan-cake from the Grand Cafe Dining Room. However, Chef decided to change things up and create some new pancakes which are healthier and pay homage to the more classic and simple pancake. On the new menu you’ll see Old Fashioned Buttermilk Pancakes served with seasonal berries and Organic Multi Grain Pancakes with bananas and a berry compote. These both sound amazing, but I gotta tell ya the warm, buttery, chewy, pineapple with caramelized outer shell and sweet pineapple with caramel is something you’ll never forget. I am featuring this “off menu” item because even though they aren’t on the printed menu you can still pre order them and they are phenomenal. Special order $18.
