Good eats: Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse

After a recent renovation and grand reopening, Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse BBQ in Kihei, offers tender, delicious BBQ served hot and fresh in this newly rejuvenated location.

Fat Daddy's Kihei
Located at 1913 S. Kihei Road there’s a good amount of parking in the area and lots of nearby eateries and fun bars.

The dining room is open and inviting with many wooden accents. This new refined barnyard feel is complete with casual dining inside and an extended area on the mauka side of the restaurant. It’s perfect for families and if you’re craving some BBQ after a day at the beach this will likely satisfy those tangy/spicy cravings. Located facing the Foodland side of the “Triangle” in Kihei, this is more of a casual dining experience. You could wear shorts, t-shirts, slippers and feel right at home. Upon entering you are greeted with a big smile and friendly service. Get there early and you won’t have to wait too long for a table.

Fat Daddy's after remodel

Open daily from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. the menu is extensive and includes items that can be ordered ala carte or as complete plates. The ala carte items include BBQ Chicken, Burnt Ends, TX Hot Links, Pulled Pork, Brisket, Ribs and a sampler plate that includes all 6 meats, cornbread and 2 large sides. The ala carte items are sold by weight (ex. 1 lb, 1/2 lb. and full or half a bird/rack). The dinner plates, on the other hand, feature one main, come with a choice of 2 sides and the option to upgrade and add to your plate for an additional charge. It may seem confusing just ask the waitstaff to explain it to you and let them know what you are looking for; they can best recommend how to order. Dinner plates range from $15.50-$18.50.

Cole slaw
I ordered the burnt ends with cole slaw, watercress salad and added on brisket. The Carolina-Style Cole Slaw is excellent and instead of a creamy dressing this is more vinegar then anything. It’s super delicious and cuts the fatty meat with its dressing and nice fresh crunch.
The Waipoli Farms Watercress Salad is super yummy, in fact we ordered another side of it. Full of fresh leafy greens, and served with another delicious dressing, this was an innovative salad that utilized local ingredients in a refreshing way.
The Brisket was perfectly cooked, delicious, brushed with perfectly flavored BBQ sauce and served with a side of sauce, but it didn’t really need it. The meat was juicy, tender and full flavored. I am actually salivating while writing this.
Burnt ends
The Burnt Ends were good and very moist, but these aren’t burnt ends. It looks like they took pieces of cut meat and topped them with more sauce. Although a bit disappointing that these weren’t the charred end pieces I had hoped for, it was still really good and like eating ribs without the bone or the mess. If you love burnt ends your best bet it to get the brisket.
Mac n cheese
The Mac ‘n Cheese came highly recommended by the waitress. It was definitely lacking something as the flavors were just blah. The sauce had too much cream, not enough cheese and also needed salt. Perhaps toasted seasoned breadcrumbs for texture would also enhance this side dish. We should have got the cornbread.

Overall, the flavors, quality, excellent service and affordable prices would definitely warrant a return. If you are seeking good quality BBQ and don’t want to do it yourself this is a great place to stop in, enjoy a filling, tasty and delicious meal. I look forward to visiting Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse again.
