Maui couple changing lives one “Smile” at a time

This is a love story that began in Boston and is continuing on Maui. The tale of a Maui girl who left the island for college and met her future husband. Together this duo is bringing advancements in the field of dentistry to a whole new level. This is none other than the story of Maui’s own, Dr. Kelly Kawahara and her husband Dr. Todd Girard.

Dr. Kawahara (Kelly) and Dr. Girard (Todd) met while attending Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2001. On their first date, Kelly made it clear to Todd that she had every intention to move back home to Maui upon completion of school. Todd, being the open-minded person he is, graciously accepted this idea and thus began their journey together. After years of studying, taking exams, and of course getting those movie dates in, the two graduated with their Doctorate of Dental Medicine in 2005 and moved to Maui. A year later this accomplished couple got married and started their dental career servicing the community of Maui.

For Todd, transitioning from growing up in Massachusetts to becoming a Maui resident came easy. Kelly laughed as she reminisced about her family, introducing Todd to new foods and a different cultural lifestyle. She said Todd was very open to learning the ways of Maui and in fact, he eats a wider variety of local foods than she does. Todd mentioned how he grew up loving seafood so trying things like: poke, sashimi, and sushi was no problem at all. Several years into their new life on Maui, they welcomed their first child Aiden and most recently their beautiful baby girl, Mckenzie.

Smile Suite Ohana

After ten years of working for a dental group practice and establishing a family of their own, the couple decided to open a private practice, Smile Suite. I had the opportunity to visit their facility and was immediately fascinated with the serene ambiance and creative planning of this office. However, calling it a dental office does no justice as it is basically like an extremely modern home similar to the Hamptons with a touch of Hawai’i. From top to bottom and side to side, everything within is customized to create a warm and inviting experience for their patients. Their dental tools and advanced technology incorporated goes beyond anything Maui has ever seen.

Patients I spoke with were utterly impressed with the architecture of Smile Suite and the welcoming atmosphere it encompasses.

Nevertheless, they said what tops this is the genuine and compassionate dental care they receive from Todd and Kelly.

In spending time with both doctors it is evident that they truly want to give patients the best service at the highest level of comfort possible. Whether it’s sitting in relaxing dental chairs while looking out big bay windows or viewing live images of your dental work, your experience at Smile Suite will not feel like “going to the dentist.”

And so this love story continues, one that started with an intelligent Maui girl and a brave Massachusetts guy who are now sharing their love of dentistry with the people of Maui. Both are members of various respectable associations including the American Dental Association, Hawai’i Dental Association, and Maui County Dental Society. Not surprising, in 2014 and 2015 both Kelly and Todd was voted one of Hawai’i’s Best Dentist by their peers.

With all of this said, Dr. Todd Girard and Dr. Kelly Kawahara invite you to their fully digital State-of-the-Art practice conveniently located at the new Maui Lani Shopping Center. Give them a call at (808) 756-9161 or visit their website at smilesuitemauilani.com and become a part of their wonderful dental ‘ohana. You will not be disappointed with the outstanding professionalism of these humble, warm, and knowledgeable doctors. We all have reasons to smile and at Smile Suite…your smile is their passion!
