Paddle boarder assisted off Spreckelsville Thursday evening

On Thursday 12/17/15, at 5:32 p.m., firefighters responded to a standup paddle boarder needing assistance getting back to shore near the Spreckelsville area.

At 5:42 p.m., Kahului firefighters began searching the baby beach area of Spreckelsville. The fire department’s Air 1 helicopter and rescue watercraft searched offshore for the female paddle boarder who called for help with her cell phone. Darkness forced Air 1 to abandon the search, however, the rescue watercraft eventually found the paddler about a half-mile off of Stable Road, at the end of the airport runway.

At 6:30 p.m., the paddler was brought in with no injuries, at Kaa Point in Kanaha, also known as Kite Beach. The 30-year-old female from Oakland, CA, was making a downwind run from Maliko Bay with a male paddler from Makawao but fell behind. She called for help after losing sight of her partner and was having trouble finding their destination at Kaa Point.

An engine and rescue crew out of Kahului, Air 1, and Paia firefighters responded to the rescue call.
